We read the menus that cafés, restaurants and bars publish on their own websites, kept one standard hot cappuccino price per venue after checking it against the menu text, removed outliers and took the median. A place needs at least 20 venues to be listed. Delivery apps, price-comparison sites and reviews were not used.
It had fewer than 20 venues with a cappuccino price we could read on their own website. 47 more cities were checked; they are listed on this page with their count.
Yes. The index figures are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0 with a link to this page. The file of every price is free under the Open Database License (ODbL), because the list of venues comes from OpenStreetMap.
Which venues. For every place we took the cafés, restaurants and bars that list a website in OpenStreetMap within the official city boundary (for London: Westminster, the City and eight inner boroughs). A program read each venue's own website, menu pages and PDF menus first, respecting robots.txt, and kept the text around every mention of cappuccino and espresso. Delivery apps, price-comparison sites, reviews and social media were never used.
Which prices. Each candidate price was checked against its menu text: a standard hot single cup, not a double, iced, alcoholic or dessert version, not a breakfast deal. Unclear prices were dropped, not guessed. One price per venue. In each place, prices beyond 1.5 times the interquartile range were removed as outliers; the index is the median of the rest. A place needs at least 20 venues.
Limits. Venues with their own website lean towards the upper end of a city's prices, in every city alike. A menu online may be older than the menu on the table. Cup sizes are not the same everywhere. Read the figures as a fair comparison between places, not as the price in every café.

Printed menus cost more than the first print run once you count reprints, damage and languages: 450€ to 1,000€ a year for a typical restaurant, against 155.88€ for a QR menu.
A QR code menu is a restaurant menu guests open on their own phone by scanning a code on the table. How it works, what it costs, how to make one, and real examples.
