Why Owners Love Building Their Menu With AI
The AI does the typing and leaves the decisions to you. What it reads right, why it stops to ask about meats and allergens, and what it saves compared with typing a menu by hand.
With doXmenu's AI you do not type your menu. You photograph the one you already have or upload the PDF, and the AI reads it into a draft, translated into up to six of your languages. It does the typing and leaves the decisions to you: it asks before it guesses, and nothing goes live until you press Publish.
Here is what the AI gets right, why it stops to ask, and what it saves you. For the steps in order, read how to create a digital menu with AI.
What does the AI get right?
It reads a printed menu the way a person would and builds the same menu in doXmenu:
- Your structure: the menus and sections you already use, such as Food and Drinks, Starters or Cocktails
- Every dish and drink, with its name and description
- Prices, with their currency
- Ingredients and allergens, where your menu lists them
- 7 diet tags: Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Low Carb, Spicy and Honey
- Your languages: it translates the menu into up to six of your venue's languages while it builds it
It works from photos (JPG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC) or a PDF of up to 40 pages. A few minutes later you get an email: your draft is ready.
Why does it ask before it guesses?
Guests trust a menu with two things: their money and their health. A wrong price starts an argument at the table, and a wrong allergen can make a guest seriously ill. So where the menu itself is unclear, the AI does not pick an answer. It asks you when:
- your languages disagree about a meat or an allergen, for example the Macedonian line of a dish says veal and the English line says pork
- an allergen symbol is crossed out or cannot be read
- one dish has two prices
- a currency looks wrong
A question about a meat or an allergen has to be answered before the menu can be published. The AI cannot know which of two languages is right, or whether a crossed-out symbol means the recipe changed. You can, and it costs you one answer.
What does it save you compared with typing the menu by hand?
Typing a menu by hand means filling in every dish, one at a time, before anything can be translated. With AI, your part shrinks to the decisions:
| Part of the menu | By hand | With AI |
|---|---|---|
| Menus, sections and dishes | Create each one, type its name and description | Read from your photos or PDF |
| Prices | Type every price and set the currency | Read with their currency, with a question if a currency looks wrong |
| Allergens and diet tags | Pick them dish by dish | Read where your menu lists them, with 7 diet tags |
| Other languages | Only after the whole menu is typed | Translated into up to six languages while it builds |
| Your part | All of the above | Answer its questions, check the draft, press Publish |
What does not change is that you check the draft before guests see it. The AI takes the typing, and the judgement stays yours.
What stays in your hands?
- Publishing. The menu lands as a draft, and nothing reaches guests until you press Publish.
- Every line. Change any dish, price or translation by hand, before or after you publish.
- Dish photos. The AI does not create photos of your dishes; you add your own.
- The look. The AI does not apply a design. Choose from 70 palettes in 10 groups by type of venue and 16 font styles, or set 6 colours yourself with an eyedropper, and add your logo and a background photo.
For help with the look, AI design is a separate tool: upload your logo and get three designs made to match it, in colours and font styles.
What does it cost?
AI menu creation is included in every doXmenu plan, from 12.99€ a month billed yearly. Each account can create 2 AI menus a day and 10 a month. The first month is free and no card is needed. See the pricing page, the complete features guide or the AI menu section of our homepage, and for everything the AI reads on one page, the AI menu import overview.
Frequently asked questions
How does the AI avoid mistakes on my menu?
It asks instead of guessing whenever the menu itself is unclear: two prices for one dish, a crossed-out or unreadable allergen symbol, a currency that looks wrong, or languages that disagree about a meat or an allergen. The menu then arrives as a draft that you check before you press Publish.
Why can't I publish before I answer a question?
Because the question is about a meat or an allergen, and guests choose or avoid a dish because of it. Only you know which answer is true, so the menu waits for yours.
Do I still need to type my menu?
No. The AI reads the sections, dishes, prices, descriptions, ingredients, allergens and diet tags from your photos or PDF. You type only where you want to change a line in the draft.
Does the AI design my menu or add dish photos?
No. It builds the content, not the look. You add your own dish photos and choose a palette, a font style or your own colours. AI design, a separate tool, makes three designs to match your logo.
